Heat the small end of the rod with a torch. The pin will fall out. I do that a lot when they want to reuse a piston but also want the rod.

You could heat the piston and the pin comes loose. I use a 1/2” socket extension and a rubber mallet.

I hated having to work on that style of piston. They were a pain to deburr and always had trouble with the final pin fit.
