The upper layers of skin are crucial for tattooing: the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis varies in thickness, from 0.03 millimeters at the thinnest point around the eyes to 2 millimeters at the thickest point on the soles of the feet, averaging around 0.3 to 1.5 millimeters. This layer is constantly renewed in a cycle of about four weeks. Any color-changing substances that penetrate deeper become permanent!
