you need a witness to convert. This is because in a law of court in sharia law you would need to prove you are muslim before trial.

It’s better if witness so if the person has fallen into error or kufr again they can warn others. For example wants to marry witness can warn.

if you don't have a muslim name I recommend doing the shahada with a imam at a later time so you can get a certificate that will help you go to hajj
