Haka tautoko (haka of support) for my whānau (family) ❤️🖤🤍 So proud of my brother @Familyfoils.tcg, sister and mum for stepping out of their comfort zone, embracing our culture, and reconnecting with our tūpuna (ancestors) and whakapapa (ancestry) through kapa haka (Māori performing arts). For those who don’t know, a haka tautoko is a haka of support - our way of showing respect, pride and support for those performing on stage. This ritual is carried out by whānau (family) in the crowd after the final kapa haka performance - there is no better time to show our respect and pride for people performing ACTUAL kapa haka! I started this haka for my whānau, and our Ngāpuhi whānau (people from our tribe) in the crowd had my back ✊🏾❤️ The group performing on stage is a community kapa haka group from the Far North of New Zealand, with both Māori (Indigenous people of New Zealand) and Pākehā (European New Zealanders) embracing and celebrating our culture together - kotahitanga (unity) 🫱🏻‍🫲🏾 And yes, it was extremely loud, so no one is offended by the older people blocking their ears 😂 The crowd was made up of their whānau and friends, there to support them during their final performance for Matariki (the Māori New Year). That’s one of the beautiful things about haka - you don’t have to understand every word to feel the wairua (spirit). It transcends language and connects people ❤️ This haka is specific to Ngāpuhi - our iwi (tribe). Proud to be Māori ✊🏾 Ka mau te wehi e hoa mā! (Amazing work, my friends!) ❤️🤍🖤 #maori #haka #ngapuhi #whanau #aotearoa
