This is the beautiful Kira Doxtator, with Supernaturals modelling, wearing my 'Inuvialuk at the Met Gala' look created during my time at the 2022 Indigenous Haute Couture fashion residency program at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. My idea was what might an Inuvialuk wear if invited to the Met Gala... our traditional materials of course! This look features a harp seal vest, lined with silk, edged in leather, to be worn open or closed, with a high low hem. A black glitter tulle skirt with hand sewn black fox fur puffs and a ring seal waisband with Swarovski crystals embedded into the fur. Matching glitter shawl with fox fur puffs. Accessories: Earrings are an extra large version of my signature seal heart rainbow fringe earrings, with extra long sealskin strips in every colour, with Swarovski crystals, bedas and gold hooks. Necklace base is upcycled, a statement piece with rainbow seal and polar bear fur. Special thank you to Dene Artist Lucy Anne Yakeleya. My Mentor at the Banff Indigenous Haute Couture fashion residency. She hand sewed the fox fur puffs onto the shawl to help me complete the look. Mahsi Lucy Anne! Special thank you to Dene Artists: D'Arcy Moses, lead instructor Suzan Marie @@sprucerootweaver, Mentor at Banff who both guided me and supported me on this project, even as it turned out different from my initial plan! What an experience to show this piece of my heart and culture at Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week 2023!
