![Just because bacteria are invisible to the naked eye, doesn’t mean their size is inconsequential. And while the size of a single bacterium can vary significantly—if the smallest were the size of your hand ✋, the largest could fit 400 tractor trailers inside of itself—there is a sweet spot. Bacteria can’t get any smaller because there wouldn’t be enough space for critical components like DNA 🧬and proteins that they need to survive. On the other hand, they can’t get larger because their energy demands would skyrocket, and they wouldn’t be able to house enough ribosomes (molecular factories critical for producing proteins) to keep them running.¹ So, in the world of bacteria, there is such a thing as too big. And too small, for that matter. • ¹ How do we know? A team of computational biologists designed a computer model to predict how microbial metabolism and cellular composition change in relation to varying cell size.
