In 1915, Dutch spies Willem Roos and Haicke Janssen were executed by firing squad at the Tower of London, having been found guilty of espionage. This is the secret code hidden in their Cigar orders. The large cigar orders being placed by Jansen and Roos from British ports looked suspicious to censors because British sailors did not smoke expensive cigars. Their telegrams were passed to cypher expert Major Reginald John Drake, who quickly broke their unsophisticated code. The price list contains a secret code in which each type of cigar represents a different kind of warship. So, when Roos telegraphed an order from Edinburgh for 10,000 Sumatra S.S. cigars on 25 May 1915, he meant that there were ten battleships in Edinburgh. Janssen was arrested on 29 May 1915, after sending a suspicious telegram le hotel. Because Roos was sending telegrams to the same address ind, the cable sensors quickly identified him, and he too was arrested.
