This also applies to irl UX like physical stores, the amount of space between aisles in an Asian grocer is often so much smaller.

This is so fascinating. Sounds like the “universality” of our principles in the US aren’t that universal

the moment the Facebook app was split into the app and a messenger app was the moment they lost a huge high value ad traffic and active users.

so interesting how culture informs design not only across user interfaces but most likely in home architecture, clothing, etc

A previous co-worker did a similar talk for SXSW. Her name is Jessica Shen. Highly recommend looking up her talk.

I hate that Amazon had all their services on diff apps (kindle, video, shopping, prime now, and Go) and was happy they folded some in

I don't mind merging apps together but what I can't stand is the Easter UI. I know if I grew up there I would get used to it but my god it's painful.

as someone who buys a TON of stuff from Japan and some from China, using their sites is an absolute nightmare! They have a ton of information but 1/3

I think the answer is simpler, it’s just the flavour of design in the west at the moment. Busy designs were popular at one point, they aren’t now.

I’ve always wondered why Korean web / app designs looked more cluttered and felt less intuitive. This is fascinating and would love to learn more!

Another psychological aspect of overwhelmingly rich app desgin is because in the East the physical market place, crowded market means it doing well.

this is so interesting! As someone with US and Chinese apps, I’ve never even thought about this difference. The language theory is very interesting

I've started to become suspicious of minimalist menus because it feels like the vendor is curating my choice options

The average user is getting more tech savy every day I think we are good for a push on more complicated designs. For example the app discord.

My theory is Chinese apps have to cater a lot more users within a single market. Also expanding their monopoly through cross integration.

In South Korea, Kakao was by far one of my favorite apps. They do have seperate on taxi and maps apps but the main app is INFORMATION DENSE ‼️

The west is getting more comfortable with east esthetic and culture. Things have happened in the east are becoming trending

Curious if ppl in the east consider info-dense apps better design more because of aesthetic or functionality

Couldn’t it also be that they are a bit behind on design. In the early period of Western internet info was also dence.

It's only words. Pictures on chinese online shopping is way better. In the US(Amazon), I'll be glad to get 5 low res 100x100 pixel pictures.

Very interesting! I studied cultural psychology in undergrad, and seeing how that extends into UI/UX is fascinating. Ty for sharing👏❤️

my theory is the shitty useless ads we used to have on western internet trained me to skip over information dense sections of pages.
