**This morning I remembered Imam al-Shadhili's saying "ghayn al-anwar" (the veiling of lights)...** I was trying to find east/qibla direction and couldn't see the traffic lights because of the sun's own light — I just stood there, not knowing! --- Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili (may God be pleased with him) said: "I heard the hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ: 'Indeed my heart becomes veiled, and I seek God's forgiveness a hundred times a day.' Its meaning puzzled me, so I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ [in a vision], and he said to me: 'O blessed one, that is a veiling of lights, not a veiling of otherness.'" --- **Ghayn al-aghyar (veiling by "otherness")** = a veil caused by attachment to other-than-God, heedlessness, and preoccupation with worldly things instead of the Truth. **Ghayn al-anwar (veiling by lights)** = not heedlessness of God at all, but rather a veil that comes from the sheer intensity of incoming lights, spiritual unveilings, and gnosis. That is, the knower (the 'arif) moves from one luminous station to a higher one, and so the previous station appears, relative to what comes after it, like a veil — and he seeks God's forgiveness for it. Al-Munawi explained this meaning by saying that al-Shadhili was in constant spiritual ascent: every time waves of gnostic light poured over his heart, he rose to a higher rank. --- **[On ghayn al-aghyar in more detail:]** It's the veil that comes from attachment to other-than-God. For example: - Preoccupation with wealth, status, and people - Following one's whims/desires - Heedlessness of God - Attachment to causes/means while forgetting the Causer So the heart becomes occupied with "the others" — meaning things, creatures, and worldly causes — insofar as they distract it from God. Example: someone who prays, but their heart is drowning in their problem, or in money, or in what people are saying. This is closer to *ghayn al-aghyar*. **[On ghayn al-anwar in more detail:]** This one is subtler and finer. It's when the heart has moved into a luminous state — of gnosis, presence, humility (khushu'), or witnessing some matter of faith — and then moves to something even higher than it. The thing that was light at the previous rank can become a veil relative to the higher rank. That's why they say: "a veiling of lights, not a veiling of otherness." Meaning: the veil here isn't due to sin or attachment to the world, but due to stopping at a particular light instead of continuing to ascend beyond it. --- Your own image of standing lost, unable to see the sun *because of* the su
