Shin pain? Here's what's actually going on 👇🏼 😢 New shoes usually aren't the problem. Shin pain (medial tibial stress syndrome, aka shin splints) is almost always a training load issue, not a footwear one. 🤷‍♀️ It typically shows up when there's been a sudden spike in volume, intensity, or a change in surface, without your shins having the capacity to handle it yet. ✨ Your bones and tissues adapt to load over time. Ramp up too fast and they don't get the chance to catch up, that's when pain creeps in. 🏃‍♀️ Common culprits: increasing weekly kms too quickly, adding speed work or hills before you're ready, or jumping back into running after time off at your old volume. 👇🏼 The fix isn't a new pair of shoes. It's building capacity gradually, calf and tib strength work, and getting your load progression right for where you're actually at. ❌although some shoes can load your shins more like carbon plates and low heel drops - it’s not the individual shoe mostly it’s just the rapid change from old shoes that your body hasn’t adjusted to. 🫶 Chuck in some strength training alongside your running and give your shins time to adapt rather than pushing through. Discomfort is information, not danger. But shin pain that's sharp, localised, or getting worse with every run is your body asking for a proper look. These aren't a substitute for Physio assessment. If you are injured or dealing with a niggle get looked at so your load is right for your body.
