Long before cartoons dominated television, millions of Ghanaian children eagerly waited each week for By the Fireside, one of the country’s most iconic children’s television programmes. It was far more than entertainment—it was a classroom of culture, history, and moral values. Produced by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and hosted by the legendary Grace Omaboe, affectionately known as Maame Dokono, the programme brought Ghana’s ancient oral storytelling tradition into living rooms across the country. Inspired by the custom of elders gathering children around a fire in the evenings to tell stories, By the Fireside recreated that experience on television for a new generation. At the heart of the programme were Anansesɛm—the famous folktales of Kwaku Ananse, the clever spider whose adventures entertained audiences while teaching timeless lessons about honesty, wisdom, patience, humility, respect, and the consequences of greed. Traditional songs, drama, riddles, and audience participation made every episode both educational and unforgettable. For children growing up in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, By the Fireside became a cherished part of childhood. It helped preserve Ghana’s rich cultural heritage at a time when television was rapidly changing, ensuring that the country’s storytelling traditions continued to inspire new generations.
