I should note I was wrong: Irish and Scottish accents merge also, but they merge to the other vowel that NA Englishes do.

Interesting. I grew up in Maryland, and I say cot and caught differently, but my “caught” is somewhere between your “cot” and “caught.”

On the West Coast it’s cot-caught merger except for specifically the San Francisco Bay area and I don’t know why that is but I think it’s cool

From Michigan- I say cot as in dot and caught as in cauht. Think of how we mimic a crow - ka kaw! That “kaw” is the first part of “caught”.
