NEW SLAINS CASTLE 🏴 Perched dramatically on the cliffs above Cruden Bay, New Slains Castle is one of Scotland’s most atmospheric ruins — and its story is every bit as dark as the place itself. The castle was first built around 1597 by Francis Hay, the 9th Earl of Erroll, after his original stronghold, Old Slains Castle, was destroyed on the orders of King James VI. Originally known as Bowness, the castle was expanded over the centuries before being transformed into a grand Scots Baronial residence in the 1830s. But perhaps the most fascinating chapter came centuries later… Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, regularly visited nearby Cruden Bay between 1892 and 1910. He wrote parts of his work here, and New Slains is widely believed to have influenced his vision of Castle Dracula. The castle even contains a distinctive octagonal room, remarkably similar to one described in Dracula. There is a little myth surrounding the story, though. Stoker’s original notes for Dracula pre-date his first visit to Cruden Bay, so it isn’t quite accurate to say that seeing Slains Castle suddenly gave him the idea for Dracula. But the castle and its wild coastal surroundings almost certainly helped shape the atmosphere and imagery of his writing. And then there’s the castle’s final twist… In 1925, the roof was removed, along with parts of the building, partly to avoid taxation. The once-grand residence was left to the elements, eventually becoming the haunting ruin we see today. Standing here with the North Sea crashing against the cliffs, it’s not hard to understand how a place like this could inspire stories of darkness, mystery and monsters. Maybe Dracula wasn’t born in Scotland… but some of his atmosphere certainly feels like it was. 🧛♂️🌊🏴 #Scotland #castle #outlander
