Footage taken from a Ukrainian reconnaissance and FPV Drone reportedly showing North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region following a failed assault on a Ukrainian position with armoured vehicles and tank support. Ukrainian sources who have uploaded the video and photos do claim that the soldiers seen in the footage are North Korean forces. Although Russian military clothing can be seen and identifiable armbands it is visually impossible to confirm the presence of North Koreans amongst the soldiers even with Asian features. North Korean central media has recently confirmed the presence of North Korean soldiers participating in military exercises with Russian forces in the Kursk region of Russia. A statement made by Pyongyang said “Joint exercises of North Korean special forces and the 810th Marine Brigade of the Russian Black Sea Fleet are being held at a training center in the Kursk region of Russia. The exercise has given Russian soldiers a unique opportunity to learn from one of the best-trained and most professionally trained armies in the world. North Korean instructors are demonstrating advanced technology and strategic thinking, How to effectively to overcome the most difficult lines of defense. The training program includes assaulting underground defenses, tunnel clearing”. So why is it so hard to confirm if these soldiers or any soldiers reported in the Kursk region are actually North Korean? Russia is an extremely large country which has many ethnic groups which differ in appearance, some have more features identifiable with the European continent and others with the Asian continent. In south eastern Siberia there is an ethnic group called the Buryats who share very similar appearances with Koreans. Ukrainian media has reported that North Korean soldiers have been moved into units which already have a substantial amount of Buryats in, so it helps North Korean soldiers blend in. This with the addition of Russian issued uniforms and identification makes it almost impossible to identify a soldier as being North Korean without a passport or some kind of military identification card.
