Here are some things you can do to get them over the finish line before the big frosts set in. You want your squashes to be ripe before harvesting for a couple of reasons. The first is flavour. As with any fruit, squashes reach optimum sweetness when fully ripe. The other thing is storage. Squashes store best when harvested when ripe. Squashes are ripe when they reach their desired colour which usually means all the green has gone. For example these butternut squashes start off green and slowly turn to orangey tan. This one still has green stripes on it so it’s not ripe, whereas this one has turned fully brown. You’re also looking for the stems to be corky, and the skin should be difficult to pierce with your fingernail. To excelerate the ripening process, remove all the leaves and any very young squashes from your plants. This will focus the plants’ energy on ripening the larger fruits on the plant. It’s getting chilly here and we’ve had a couple of light frosts. Three of my squashes were caught by a suprise light frost the other day! Squashes won’t store if they are frost bitten so you want to prevent this. To protect my squashes from frost I’m keeping an eye on the weather forecast and wrapping my squashes in wool if the nighttime temp forecast is 5C or lower. You could also use horticultural fleece. Just make sure you suspend it above the squash with sticks so it’s not touching. If your squash does get frost bitten, you can harvest it, cut it into chunks and freeze it. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign
