A Remarkable Start: Induction Week for Occupational Certificate Chef Students We had the pleasure of welcoming our very first cohort of Occupational Certificate Chef students with an exciting and inspiring induction week — a week that not only introduced them to the world of culinary arts but also set the tone for their journey ahead. From the very beginning, there was a buzz of anticipation. Though visibly nervous, the students arrived eager to learn and curious about what lay ahead. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and the induction programme was designed to feed that energy with hands-on experiences, foundational lessons, and fun, interactive challenges. A key highlight of the week was Wednesday’s session with Chef Lopion, who demonstrated essential knife skills — a core competency for any aspiring chef. Students watched, wide-eyed, as Chef Lopion showcased precision, control, and artistry with every slice and chop. It was clear that they were in awe, realising just how much there was to learn and master in the culinary craft. The students were later introduced to their practical kitchen spaces — their new “homes” for the months to come. Here, they were familiarised with the professional facilities, industry expectations, safety protocols, and behavioural standards that would shape their training. They were also issued their very first tools of the trade — their knife kits — which were introduced with care, along with detailed explanations of the purpose and proper use of each item. For many, this moment marked the beginning of their transformation into true culinary professionals. Midweek, Tahriq Smith facilitated a dynamic session titled “Chefreneur” where the concept of culinary entrepreneurship was introduced. The workshop was this creative and highly engaging, students explored how to turn small food business ideas into tangible concepts using MVP (Minimum Viable Product) thinking. They were grouped into teams, sent to brainstorm and conduct research in the library, and even test assumptions on campus. A highlight of this session was the marshmallow tower challenge, which taught the importance of teamwork, creativity, and agile thinking. The day concluded with each group pitching their food business ideas through posters and short presentations. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive — students appreciated the chance to collaborate, innovate, and express their entrepreneurial spirit in such a practical way. To wrap up the week on a high note, the students participated in the Amazing Chefs Race, a fun and fast-paced activity that had them explore local hospitality establishments around the campus. They returned with stories, laughter, and fresh inspiration from their discoveries. The day ended with a lively ‘Dress the Chef’ competition and team-building activities that allowed them to bond with fellow students and meet various members of their new brigade. The induction week was not just about orientation; it was about igniting passion, forming connections, and laying the foundation for excellence. As we move forward, we’re excited to watch this group grow into confident, skilled, and innovative chefs. The journey has only just begun — and what a wonderful start it has been!
