Really REALLY sucks to wake up and see this. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.🙏🏻 - as the rescue efforts are ongoing we are sure that details will change but this incident appears to be a mass casualty situation. from @thecognitivemarine Two lanes of the 4 lane bridge were open and active when this happened and there is to believe to have been around 20 cars crossing and people still in the water. The ship lost power multiple times and mechanical steering capabilities and could not stop quick enough once off course. The Coast Guard received a report of an impact at 1:27 a.m. Eastern time at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, said Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the Coast Guard in Baltimore. The Singapore-flagged cargo ship, the Dali, had hit the bridge, which is part of Interstate 695. The Dali is 948 feet long, he said. MarineTraffic, a maritime data platform, showed a Singapore-flagged container ship of the same name stopped directly under the bridge early Tuesday. The Dali left Baltimore at 1 a.m. time and was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to the site. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it. Sonar has indicated that there are vehicles in the water, where the temperature was about 47 degrees Fahrenheit Update: Authorities estimate in excess of 20 people are missing with an expectation that the number will likely increase. Temperature was around 30 Fahrenheit at the time of the accident and a number of construction workers were actively working on the bridge at the time of the accident. Harbor pilot was on board, who would have navigated the ship through the lane and out into open ocean. It appears that the Dali and just released from her tugs who would have ensured exit out of Baltimore harbor. Once clear the Harbor Pilot on board would have taken her through to the last buoy (Norfolk) prior to exit. More to follow. @officiallyoffshore @northamericanrescue
