📡 The Duga radar system is one of the most famous secret Soviet-era installations. This massive over-the-horizon radar station was built to detect intercontinental ballistic missile launches at distances of several thousand kilometers. Its antennas reached heights of around 150 meters, and the entire structure stretched over 700 meters, which led many to mistake it for a gigantic “metal wall.” While operational, the system produced a distinctive signal that radio enthusiasts around the world heard as a constant tapping sound. This is why it was nicknamed the “Russian Woodpecker” in the West. Enormous resources and years of work by thousands of engineers and military specialists were invested in its construction. The complex was located near Chernobyl, and after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, it was soon taken out of service. Numerous legends and theories have emerged around the site, although none of them are confirmed by facts. What is known for sure is that the Duga was part of the Soviet early-warning system for missile attacks and represented a remarkable engineering achievement of its time. Today, the abandoned site remains one of the most mysterious relics of the Cold War era and continues to attract thousands of researchers, photographers, and tourists from around the world. // #chernobyl #duga #чернобыль #дуга #pripyat
