I would use my special drill, drill a hole and use deck screws. Nails come loose all the time

for a cheaper version you can take an old hammer and just cut it in half. there's always a hammer in yard sale for about 2 bucks

I just leave that nail out. I have a pouch full of nail heads and glue them in tight places.
