I would use a live center any time possible when roughing out a piece . Live center is the spiny bit with a Morse taper

Most important!!! The bigger the diameter, the slower the speed!!! Hard to tell from video but the speed might be too high.

am a machinist that has done a lot of lathe work. do NOT wear any dangling things around that lathe. no rings or gloves either. degloving is nightmare

I operate a lathe and vertical knee milling machine. I work with metals. For interrupted cuts try high speed steel. Carbide is very brittle .

safety and control tip- hand should be against the guard. I prefer an under grip when doing my rounding off as chips shoot right into the overhand

Most live centers are 60°, so are center drills! Your love center should sit INTO the piece with slight tension
