The Gerewol festival changes markedly between day and night, reflecting different social, aesthetic, and ritual functions within Wodaabe (Bororo Fulani) culture. During the day, Gerewol is highly performative and evaluative. Men engage in the Yaake dance—standing shoulder to shoulder, elongating posture, rolling eyes, baring teeth, and chanting in unison to accentuate ideals of male beauty (symmetry, whiteness of eyes and teeth, height, and composure). Facial makeup is meticulously visible in natural light, making cosmetic detail and bodily control central. Women circulate as active judges, quietly assessing dancers and, in some cases, selecting partners. The atmosphere is public, competitive, and socially legible, with elders present and norms clearly enforced. At night, Gerewol becomes more intimate and liminal. Singing and dancing continue by firelight or moonlight, but the emphasis shifts from visual perfection to rhythm, endurance, and emotional resonance. Movements loosen, songs lengthen, and participation broadens to include informal courtship, joking, and extended communal interaction.
