One of the biggest things that changed the way I draw was realizing that a good drawing isn’t built from a bunch of perfect lines. It’s built from movement, observation, rhythm, and confidence. That’s where gesture drawing comes in. Gesture drawing is basically your way of capturing the action and energy of a subject before worrying about all the little details. Instead of asking, “How do I draw every part of this perfectly?” You ask: “What is this body doing?” Is it leaning? Twisting? Stretching? Running? Falling? Reaching? That movement becomes the foundation. And here’s the part I really want beginners to hear: Your first few gesture drawings might look absolutely ridiculous. 😂 Good. Seriously. They’re supposed to. You’re training your eye and your hand to communicate faster. You’re learning to see the big movement before getting distracted by fingers, facial features, clothing folds, and all the other tiny details that love to steal your attention. Try this: ✏️ Grab a pencil, pen, or whatever you have nearby. ⏱️ Set a timer for 30 seconds. 👀 Look for the biggest movement in the pose. 🖊️ Draw it without worrying about making it pretty. 🔁 Repeat 5–10 times. Then try 1-minute gestures. Then 2 minutes. You’ll start noticing something interesting… Your lines become more confident because you’re spending less time asking your hand for permission to make a mark. And that lesson carries over into everything. Illustration. Character design. Fashion. Animation. Painting. Graphic design. Even your thumbnails and composition sketches. A loose sketch isn’t wasted work. It’s where your brain is figuring shit out. So if you’re a beginner and your sketchbook currently looks like a crime scene of unfinished circles, crooked lines, and questionable anatomy… Welcome to the club. 😂 Keep drawing. Keep experimenting. Keep making ugly marks. Because every confident line you admire from an experienced artist was probably built on thousands of lines that looked like absolute nonsense first. Don’t chase perfect lines. Chase better ones. Save this for your next drawing session and give yourself 5 minutes of gesture practice. And if you try it, tell me: Are you a 30-second gesture person, or do you immediately spend 45 minutes drawing one eyebrow? 😂 #ArtisanAC #ArtTips #DrawingTips #DrawingPractice #GestureDrawing
