“Witchblades” was released on this day eight years ago. It was the third track on Gus and Tracy’s second collaborative EP, CASTLES II. Like the other songs on the project, they recorded it in a Los Angeles studio in early 2017, using a beat produced by Bighead and Yung Cortex that sampled Three Days Grace’s The Real You. According to Yung Cortex, “Gus and Tracy were just pumping the songs out back-to-back” when making CASTLES II, and Witchblades came together over the course of one night in the midst of this creative burst. Gus and Tracy recorded Witchblades on February 1, 2017, just two days before Never Eat, Never Sleep. They were on a roll, set to release their long-anticipated follow-up to July 2016’s Castles less than a week later. Of the EP’s five songs, Gus was particularly proud of Witchblades, calling Yung Cortex on February 2 to gush about it and playing it on an Instagram livestream teasing CASTLES II. It is also one of only two songs from the EP to receive a music video—the first one filmed for the project—shot just five days after recording the track, on the same night CASTLES II was released. As prolific and spontaneous collaborators, Gus and Tracy decided late on February 6 to film a video for Witchblades while at Gus’s home in Echo Park. Metro Blu, their friend and videographer, had originally stopped by to shoot footage for Your Favorite Dress, but when plans changed at the last minute, they instead created what would become Gus and Tracy’s most recognized music video. In his signature grainy VHS style, Metro Blu filmed them out in the street, in the house, and on the little balcony area. Gus later uploaded the final product to his YouTube channel that month. Witchblades is arguably Gus and Tracy’s biggest song. It serves as the backbone of CASTLES II, an anthem of the underground scene, and a reflection of Gus’s artistic growth as he transitioned into working on his first studio album. They performed Witchblades together at several shows across the U.S. throughout 2017, always to loud and animated crowds. Eight years since its release, it has amassed over a billion streams and earned platinum certification from the RIAA.
