Just before noon on Wednesday, October 7, a father was carrying his little boy across a sidewalk in Gainesville, Georgia. It was an ordinary errand. Samuel Skelton was off duty. He is a firefighter with the Gainesville Fire Department. In his arms was his son, Knox. Knox was 22 months old. He would have turned 2 in a couple of months. They were outside Limestone Marketplace. Then, police say, a vehicle came over the curb. Gainesville police say a 68-year-old woman was trying to park her Ford Edge in a handicap space. They say she inadvertently accelerated over the curb. The SUV struck Samuel and Knox. People nearby rushed to help. Bystanders performed CPR before paramedics arrived. Knox was flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. His family hoped he would survive. But despite the efforts of first responders and doctors, Knox died from his injuries. Samuel was also struck. Police say he did not need medical treatment. Now Samuel and his wife, Kiana, face a future without their son. The Gainesville Fire Department describes them as among the most humble, caring and genuine people it knows. And there is another painful part of this story. Some of the first responders who rushed to the scene were Samuel's own colleagues. They train for the worst emergencies. But this one involved one of their own. The department says those responders are grieving too. Police are still investigating the crash. As of Thursday, no charges had been filed against the driver. But no investigation can bring Knox back. His fellow firefighters have organized a fundraiser to help ease the financial burden while his parents grieve. Please keep Samuel and Kiana in your prayers. Pray for the first responders who tried to save Knox. And leave a message below for these parents, something kind they can read in the days ahead.
