I agree with you that the second surgeon did the right thing. The ethics are not determined by how the patient *feels* about the truth

The second surgeon was just the messenger. The psychological harm was done by the first surgeon

Of the surgeon documents his findings in his note, patients have access to their medical record.

If the second surgeon hadn’t told her, wouldn’t it make him a kind of accomplice in the first surgeon’s mistake?

Even when things hurt to know, it is nobody else’s right to keep the knowledge about my body to themselves. If a patient wants to advocate for them-

i want my friends to tell me if i have spinach in my teeth. i also want them to tell me if i’ve been engraved without my consent by my doctor!

II think it’s right to be honest, but I also think it could cause psychological harm that need not be introduce to the patient.

While I agree that the patient has the right to know, I also think that it is not S2’s place to denounce his colleague. That belongs to the patient

I think he was right by telling the ethics committee and he should have left it to them to decide how + and weather or not to tell the patient

this isn't "how professional ethics works". ethics isn't there to be an authority, its there ti maintain values.

Maybe this is just because I’m in the US, but I don’t trust a hospital disciplinary board to tell me what had happened. The 2nd surgeon was right!

What's the difference between signing with a coagulator and doing a signature final stitch?

He should have left it to an ethics board or governing board decide the appropriate action. It was not his place to inform the patient.

2/2 after the powers that be dealt with the first dr they could notify the patient formally.

Since surgeon 2 is a whistle blower, wouldn't it be the responsibility of the oversight authority to inform the patient, rather than surgeon 2?

I think S2 was right to tell the patient because it gives them the knowledge and power to act.

I don't think the surgeon should have told her. she can't do anything about it and it'll just cause psychological harm.

I'd also add that this would be very important info for the patient to have if they ever considered going to the 1st surgeon again for any reason

As a dentist I often see terrible work even neglect by previous dentists. I just tell the patient that there are problems that need to be rectified.

I still believe he was right too. I would note he should explain that things heal quickly, but I don't think the psychological harm is on him as much

I don’t think the duty to disclose is that ambiguous, and it’s a tad patronizing to say the second surgeon caused harm by disclosing to the 1/2

if S1 should be disciplined, should it be by S2? if not, then he should not be the one to tell patient. it should be by the disciplinary body.
