working with koa has really highlighted how crucial it is to emotionally connect with your dog—especially when they’re being trained to take on a big job like service work. training isn’t just about getting your dog to follow commands; it’s about building a trusting, secure bond where your dog feels safe & connected. this bond is everything, because when koa feels connected to me, she's not just working for me—she's motivated to work with me. i’ve noticed that when koa feels emotionally supported, she’s so much more in tune with me, even when we’re not training. this connection isn’t just about getting her to “do her job”—it’s about her feeling fulfilled, relaxed, & emotionally balanced. & this makes all the difference in how well she handles her tasks, stressful situations, or even new environments. Koa’s stability & well-being were (understandably!!!!) affected by the dog attacks & surgery she went through , & that means her emotional needs have to be met just as much as her physical ones. making that emotional connection every day, whether it’s through quiet moments or play, keeps her grounded & helps her build resilience to stress. i’ve realized that this emotional connection is what gives her the space to reset, recharge, & ultimately thrive as a working dog. this has been such a big part of her progress, & it reminds me that our dogs aren’t just here to perform tasks. they need us to show up for them emotionally, just like we expect them to show up for us.
