In Ohio, only if purchase car is new. Trading in and buying used, you pay the whole sales tax amount of used car.

Unless you’re in Illinois… if you buy a 30,000 car, and trade in a car valued at $15,000, you’ll pay tax on 20,000. $10,000 cap on trade in before tax
