Still remembering Kehinde Lijadu, one half of Nigeria’s most famous twin pop stars from the 1970s, the legendary ‘Lijadu Sisters’ — who passed away on Nov. 9, 2019, at the age of 71. . . Born on 22 October 1948 in Jos but grew up in Ibadan. Identical twins, Taiwo and Kehinde Lijadu were mainly active as the Lijadu Sisters from the 1960s to the 1980s—a time when it was rare to find front- women in Nigeria’s pop music scene. Although they faced certain struggles in Nigeria as young women artistes; they were always outspoken about women equality. . They started singing together at the age of 10, drawing inspiration from the Western jazz, rock and soul records bought for them by their mother, Adelaide Efunyemi Lijadu. Early on they sang as backup vocalists before releasing their first single in 1968 called ‘Iya Mi Jowo’. In 1969, they signed a contract with Decca Records. . The Lijadu Sisters gained worldwide recognition in the 1970s when American drummer, Ginger Baker, invited them on his tour. They performed with Baker’s band, Salt, at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Between 1969 and 1979, the Lijadu Sisters released five albums: Iya Mi Jowo (1969), Danger (1976), Mother Africa (1977), Sunshine (1978) and Horizon Unlimited (1979). These albums drew mostly on Afrobeat, funk, soul, reggae, organ jams and disco. . .
