The people in the comment section seeing evidence of George Carlin saying he doesn’t like punching down and just denying it is so telling.

He’s spot on of course…and the reason why Dave’s recent bit about trans people fell flat was for this reason and it lacked wit and humor

I think you nailed it! As a huge Carlin fan I’d like to think he’d appreciate your assumption. This sounds like a good foundation for a dissertation.

As a person who was exposed to Clay when I was prebuscent: I knew instinctively he was a danger to me. The license he gave to my peers was horrific.

Chapell tires to claim GREATER underdog status. He says he's not "punching down", implying that he, as an African American can't punch down.

it's also worth noting that Clay has been very open about how much he regrets his material as a comedian and considers it all pretty abhorrent

You are 100% correct. It's also telling that you can just say George Carlin, but you have to explain who Andrew dice clay was.

I see your point, but the main point that was made, no matter what, Carlin would defend to the death his right to write jokes about what he wants to.

Carlin wasn't just a comedian, but a wise educated man who expresses through comedy. The closest to a Carlin would be John Stewart. Smart/caring/funny

I think it’s also that Chappelle is stuck comedically in his same style he’s had since the early 00s. Carlin worked to change his style with the times

George would protect the right to make jokes regardless of his opinion of them. He knows the public's opinion will decide the comedians success.

Carlin and Dave are my 2 favorite comics ever. I would point you to Carlin’s bit “they’re only words” in which he argues context over the words itself

Totally agree. When interviewed by Jon Stewart he said “remember what we do is rhetoric.” He knew that comedy was as much persuasion as it was poetry
