I had a player that inherited a fire giant belt. The attunment was just a montage of them in their moms garden trying to pick up eggs and not pop them

Attunement rules don’t say the item can’t be taken off. One only loses attunement if the item is more than 100 feet away for 24 hours.

I've done this before, not necessarily with the giants belt, but my players were mining rare crystals and they had to roll perfectly or else they hit

I agree if, and only if, it's a 4+ stat increase from your base. otherwise it's no stronger than a asi from leveling.
