It unfortunately took me years of training in the weight room and not seeing the benefits within my kickboxing performance and overall athleticism to realize I wasn’t doing something right. DON’T make my mistake. The problem was I wasn’t training with intention, I wasn’t training with structure, I wasn’t training for PERFORMANCE. Regardless of your sport or craft, how you utilize your time in and out of the gym is essential. It’s an opportunity to target weak spots, correct imbalances, and fine-tune movement patterns so that when you return to your sport, you’re one step ahead. For example, with my kickboxing and Muay Thai performance, what’s important for me to focus on is my full-body endurance, explosive power through my upper body and hips, and staying light on my toes. So, what did I start adding? Explosive movements with weights, med balls, and resistance bands, incorporating plyometrics, and prioritizing compound exercises that mimic striking patterns. Once I identified my weaknesses and the areas of my athleticism I needed to improve, I could structure my training to align with my goals and drive real improvement.
