the good bacteria doesn't live in the water its on the rocks/ decorations and then the filters complete the nitrogen cycle

You just have to change 10% of the water every week-two weeks that way your nitrogen stays low.

fish are cool :
the tree is probably not of why you didn't have to cycle it (the hard surfaces are where the bacteria live)

And you used rocks from the creek too, which hold LOADS of beneficial bacteria that helps perfectly replicate a natural environment

my friend took some fish from a creek and ended up having snails take over her tank. they eat their eggs and poop em out. hope this doesn't happen!
