SQUEEZE. THE. SCAPS. This one’s for the bench pressers, chest crushers, and pec pump chasers. If you’re lying on your back for presses (bench, dumbbell, machine — whatever), you want those shoulder blades tucked, locked, and GLUED to the bench like your gains depend on it. Because, spoiler: they do. Yea yea, I know this technically goes against everything we know scapulohumeral rhythm — the concept that your shoulder blade and shoulder joint move as a team. No, that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. In this context, free-moving scapulas = energy leaks and mechanical inefficiency. Why the tight setup matters:
✅ Creates total-body stiffness
✅ Increases shoulder stability
✅ Prevents shoulder hyperextension at the bottom
✅ Transfers more force into your pecs Some easy cues to help with positioning:
✔️ Pretend you’re squeezing a pencil between your shoulder blades ✔️ Puff up your chest once you lie on the bench
✔️ Keep tension throughout the entire set — no relaxing at the bottom, no protracting up toward the ceiling at the top. Losing scap tension mid-rep = less power. Stay locked in! BUT, let’s not get it twisted. For everything else — pushups, pulldowns, overhead press, rows, etc — let those bad boys fly. We want that buttery scapular movement. No pinning. No tucking. No squeezing. Just glide, baby, glide. Chest press = squeeze em.
