Here's what I always tell nervous passengers to make them feel safer when flying. Turbulence has never brought down a modern airliner. * The plane is certified far beyond anything you will experience in flight. We still do everything we can to avoid it, talking to other aircraft and ATC, changing altitudes, and flying around it. The plane could handle it, but we want to make you as comfortable as possible. Every aircraft system has a backup. * In the event of a failure, each major system has 2-4 backups that automatically kick in if it detects an issue. From there we have checklists, training, and we come up with a plan! In the event of an engine failure. * The plane can safely fly with only 1 engine operating. It's designed and certified that way from day one. Remember, we are trained for this, we practice it so often it's routine. Pilots have a checkride every 6-9 months. * We go through all of the emergencies and systems to reinforce training, so we are prepared to handle the pressure. Our training and testing never stops. Want the smoothest ride? * Sit over the wing. It's the closest spot to the plane's center of gravity, so you feel the least motion there. And on every single flight.. * We carry extra fuel and a backup airport if the weather calls for it. We have extra eyes from our dispatcher and air traffic control.
