In the Montessori classroom, the kindergarten year is completed in the preschool setting. In this learning environment, children are free to choose work that appeals to their own academic interests and developmental needs. Unlike the factory-style approach to teaching that can be found in the public school system, the Montessori method seeks to meet the individual needs of every child by acknowledging that small children know what materials and lessons are needed to meet their own developmental needs better than the teacher could ever know. In fact, I don’t consider myself to be a teacher in the traditional sense of the word, but rather a guide through the Montessori environment and the proper usage of Montessori materials, both of which empower small children to teach themselves. Because I know that children in this plane of development are in a sensitive for movemement, language, sensorial learning, and the manipulation of small objects, I incorporate each of these into the design of my classroom. By learning abstract concepts in a concrete way through the use of hands-on materials, my students typically surpass the academic expectations set forth by the public school system. In fact, the majority of my students leave my classroom reading fluently, and nearly all of them can count linearly to 1000 and add, subtract, multiply, and divide. In doing away with academic expectations entirely, the Montessori environment produces children who FREELY CHOOSE to exceed them. #montessori #kindergarten #montessoriteacher #handsonlearning #earlychildhoodeducation #developmentallyappropriate #publicschool #montessorimaterials #montessoriclassroom #montessorikindergarten #montessorihomeschool #montessorimethod #montessoritok #montessoripreschool #learnthroughplay #sensorylearning #playbasedlearning #mariamontessori #whatismontessori #montessorichild #montessoritoddler #montessorimom #montessorihome #montessorischool #schoolshouldbefun #academicstandards
