Unfortunately, Growing On Social Media Just Changed Forever I met a guy outside Pret a couple of weeks ago who'd built a jiu-jitsu app, gave me a branded t-shirts then a business card and, in all fairness, was class so I asked him "are you making content for this yet" "Ah yeah, I need to start that." Excuse me. YOU'RE NOT MAKING CONTENT? Because you have a fear of getting on the camera and talking to your phone? To understand why I was so enraged, I had a meeting with Meta last week. One question essentially confirmed my belief based on what I was already seeing trending, this "yap" style of content and she asked if I was using the Edits app. I told her my videographer films everything on a camera, edits it, colour grades it, sends it back, and then I post it. She said "hmm." and moved on. :joy: She didn't need to say anything else because in that moment, I realised I was being a bit of a pleb. Instagram built the Edits app so creators can film it, caption it, chop the fat, and push it directly to the platform from their phone. The whole thing should be done in less than 20 minutes, if that. So I tested it. Told Declan (RIP) to put the five grand camera down and shoot everything on my iPhone instead. A video filmed in a petrol station, seven minutes to shoot, three minutes to edit, 136,000 views. A reel shot in Ireland on my phone, 640,000 views. The polished studio video from the same week? 41,000. The signals have been there for months and I ignored them because I was attached to making things look good. People are exhausted by hyper-edited transitions, flying captions and B-roll every three seconds. They want something that feels like a voice note from someone who actually knows what they're talking about, raw, conversational and real. You need less friction between having an idea and getting it out. If you see something, react to it. If you want to say something, say it.
