Not every sight word can be sounded out though. Phonics instruction is important but sight words are sight words because not every rule can apply

I thought sight words were literally because we have so many words you can’t sound out cuz the rules don’t apply and we do what we want?

This is called reading phonetically. This is how we were taught to read before sight words.

yep! I also practice spelling with my child, by reading the letters, writing them down, and spelling by memory (or sounding out)

Yes. My son memorized sightwords. My daughter learned phonics. She learned way faster than him when it comes to new words.

Taught 1st for 38 yrs. And good program is 50% phonemic & 50% sight. Not all can memorize not all can sound out. All you had to do was teach the 1.
