The Radioactive Boy Scout case. At 17 years old, David Hahn became known as the “Radioactive Boy Scout” after turning a small shed in his mother’s backyard in Michigan into a makeshift nuclear laboratory. Fascinated by chemistry and atomic energy, he began extracting radioactive materials from everyday objects such as smoke detectors, camping lanterns, and old clocks. His goal was to build a breeder reactor capable of producing nuclear fuel. David never managed to create a functioning reactor, but he did assemble a neutron source and contaminated the shed and several nearby objects with dangerous levels of radiation. The experiment was discovered by accident in 1994, when police found suspicious materials inside his car. When questioned, David warned them that some of the items were radioactive, triggering a major operation involving state and federal authorities. In 1995, teams from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency dismantled the shed, placed the contaminated materials into dozens of containers, and transported them to a specialized radioactive waste facility. Although people often claim that David built a nuclear reactor in his backyard, it is more accurate to say that he attempted to build one.
