Been doing that wet cardboard trick for years. It works. Just need to redo it every couple of years as the cardboard breaks down into the earth.

Working in the pest control industry- mulch is super pretty but it attracts tons of bugs that bed underneath.. maybe the card board will help tho🤷♀️

You might want to mix the black cow with the normal dirt next time. The cow manure gets hot and will scorch the plants
