Their leader, Griffith, is a being of impossible beauty and charisma—a man who dreams of owning his own kingdom. Griffith speaks of friendship and destiny, and for the first time, Guts lowers his sword. He forms a brotherly rivalry with the loyal Casca, the band’s only female captain, and finds a family among soldiers who bleed for him. This arc deceives the viewer. For nearly twenty episodes, Berserk feels like a grim but grounded war drama. The infamous "Eclipse" is the emotional epicenter. After Griffith is imprisoned and tortured for a year (his tendons cut, his tongue severed, his skin flayed), Guts and Casca rescue him—a broken doll of a man. But Griffith’s ambition cannot survive pity. In a field of crimson flowers, he uses a crimson Behelit, a "Egg of the King," to summon the God Hand—five demonic angels who rule causality. Griffith is given a choice: die a human cripple, or sacrifice everyone who loves him to be reborn as Femto, the fifth angel of destruction. He chooses the latter. What follows is the most harrowing sequence in animation history. Guts’ friends are devoured alive by demons. The sky becomes a whirlpool of screaming faces. And Guts, pinned down, is forced to watch as Griffith—now Femto—violates Casca before his single eye. In his desperation, Guts chops off his own trapped arm to reach her. He survives, but the brand on his neck bleeds forever, and Casca’s mind shatters into infancy. The anime ends not with revenge, but with Guts cradling the broken Casca, both of them branded, vowing in a whisper to hunt Griffith to the end of the world. Thematically, Berserk deconstructs the fantasy genre. There is no destined hero. Guts’ sword cannot kill the trauma in his head. Griffith represents the terrifying truth of the "superman"—that charisma and ambition can be so beautiful, we willingly march into hell for them. The series asks a single, brutal question: When you have lost everything—your arm, your lover’s mind, your family, your future—what remains? The answer is the series’ most radical statement: Struggle. Guts continues not because he will win, but because stopping is death. The later manga arcs (which most animes have not yet fully adapted) introduce a softer theme: healing through human connection. Guts finds new companions—a witch, a thief, a knight, a berserker-armor—and slowly learns that revenge is a poison. The Berserker Armor he eventually wears unleashes his inner beast, turning him into a white-haired demon of rage, but it devours his humanity with every use. In terms of adaptations, the 1997 anime remains beloved for its soundtrack (Susumu Hirasawa’s "Forces" and "Guts’ Theme" are iconic) and its emotional weight, despite its limited animation and a cliffhanger ending. The 2012 Golden Age films added CGI and covered the same arc more concisely. The 2016 anime, however, is widely reviled for disastrous 3D animation that butchered the manga’s later arcs. For the full story, the manga is the only complete experience. Yet, despite its flaws, Berserk endures. It is not a comfort watch. It is a nightmare you do not wake from. It stares into the abyss of human cruelty—betrayal, sexual violence, nihilism—and whispers back: "Struggle, endure, contend. That alone is the sword of the one who defies fate." For those who can bear its weight, Berserk is not just an anime. It is a testament to the human refusal to break. It teaches that even in a world designed to crush you, the act of getting back up is a form of victory. That is why, decades later, the Black Swordsman still walks.
