@mulchitover: I stupidly left a pineapple for too long and it attracted fruit flies. Although fruit flies and fungus gnats are different, they both lay eggs in the damp soil of houseplants.l so you don’t want them in the house. Whilst fruit flies don’t harm the plants, fungus gnat larvae feed on the plant roots so I’ve tried various different ways of getting rid on them and these have worked for me. To make a vinegar trap, in a jar, mix a half cup of warm water plus two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of sugar, and about six drops of liquid dish soap. Gnats will be lured in by the sugary mixture, but once they dip in for a drink, the sticky dish soap will trap them. I also sprinkle cinnamon on the top of the soil A common and easily available natural fungicide, cinnamon powder is very effective when it comes to curbing fungus gnats. Effective against damping off, cinnamon powder destroys the fungus on which the larvae feed. Lastly, a few drops of neem oil, in a spray bottle, with water and dish liquid to spray the plants and soil. This should keep all those little blighters at bay!
