All electric vehicles have a gearbox anyways - even the ones with just 1 speed. Electric motors spin way too fast to be directly attached to the wheel

Also electric motors have neither unlimited torque nor unlimited rpm, so you gear them to meet some performance profile. Multi-gear would expand that

I'm not complitely sure in why gears inside of AV. Aren't controller, variable speed drivers, soft starters more suitable than transsmition, gears?

Gear reductions can get you faster acceleration or pulling power at the same amp load.
