Too many people confuse loudness or yelling for power and influence. In my years I’ve come to learn that LIONS DON’T NEED TO ROAR. A real lion walks in a room and EVERYONE knows. They don’t need to scream and tell everyone they’re a lion. If they did, we probably think it was an insecure lion :-) People are just as guilty about speaking without pausing. I’ve have witnessed a shift and how even children’s shows and cartoons completely eliminate any dead space or pauses. I am convinced that this is having a detrimental impact on kids, attention, spans, and constantly eating stimulation and dopamine. Setting that aside for a minute, when speaking, pauses can be your most powerful technique when used correctly. Pauses allows to think and draw pictures in our minds. They allow us to absorb what is being said, and think through scenarios of how we can use, adapt, or even implement what is being spoken. When we speak too fast, we don’t allow any time for that mental process. Imagine that pauses our highlighter on a sheet of paper. Without highlighting, it’s hard to know what is most important. So we need to change the belief system that pauses are bad and remember that pauses are powerful.
