Eddie often wrote in the major tonality, and it seems that he tended away from minor chords (especially on the tonic). It's almost like he was allergic to them, or had a finite amount of songs he was allowed to use them in. Interestingly, the few times were he does very much "give in" to the power of the minor chord, he really makes it count. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love is a great example of this. That C#m in Panama is another. While the presence of the Fmaj7 over the A drone in this one really implies A minor, when the progression rolls around to the A, Eddie actually avoids playing minor, instead he opts for the sus2 voicing, which offers a more neutral yet sophisticated alternative. The verse is where I really hear that traditional 80s aeolian vibe take over, but with an Eddie twist. It modulates to D minor, and is just bursting with tense energy. While the chords are more or less Dm to Bb, Eddie's voicings and approach are indicative that he wasn't really thinking about a chord "progression" in the way most of us would, but instead he was purely thinking about a riff, and let the implied chords form underneath. The real anomaly here is that last chord, B♭9, which adds a jarring quirkiness to the riff, as short as it is. This climaxes with the descending plucked syncopated triad 'fill', which takes it to a strange, progressive, and almost 'fusion' type of sound, characterising that great "falling down the stairs but always landing on your feet' vibe that the brothers Van Halen were so good at. #evh #1984 #vanhalen #rock #80s #evhguitars #davidleeroth #alexvanhalen #amplitube #eddievanhalen #shred #riff #kramer #guitar
