As a pediatric ophthalmologist, I see parents in my clinic every day wondering if their newborn’s vision is “normal.” The truth is, a baby’s eyes undergo a massive transformation in the first six months. Baby’s Vision: * Birth: Vision is roughly 20/400. Infants are very light-sensitive and rely mostly on peripheral vision while their central vision develops. * 1–3 Weeks: They begin to see light/dark patterns. Larger shapes and bright colors start to attract their attention. * 1 Month: They can focus briefly on you, but still prefer high-contrast objects held close (8–12 inches). * 2 Months: Tracking begins! It is normal for eyes to wander or appear crossed occasionally. Red Flag: If an eye is constantly turned in or out, it’s time for an exam. * 3 Months: The eyes begin working as a team to focus and track objects. * 5 Months: Depth perception develops. The world shifts from 2D to 3D, and reaching for toys begins in earnest. * 6 Months: Color vision is significantly more developed, though visual acuity (clarity) is still catching up to adult levels. I’m using the Baby See App, developed by my alma mater bostonchildrens and chairman (and my mentor) @drdavidghunter to demonstrate this progression.
