@lukesgoldies: For systems that have goldfish, I highly recommend large volume water changes and doing them often to keep that nitrate level down. Goldfish are some of the largest waste producers in the fish keeping hobby, keeping those nitrates down is important for longterm health. #fish #goldfish #aquarium #ranchu

Say it with me “beneficial bacteria isn’t in water it’s on surfaces”

But doesn't it raise the chances of a bacterial bloom because all the fresh water kills some of the good bacteria on the filters?

I have a 10 gallon tall tank, and I only remove 5 gallons of the water to clean mine. Is that too much ? I only have a beta fish.

If that’s true then can you take those filters and cycle a brand new tank immediately?

I remove 100% then it's a little game to refill it before the fish stop flopping around

Can throw the fish into shock, going from 40ppm nitrate to 5ppm nitrate in less than a minute… no thanks. 50% is the most I do. Killing bacteria is -

That could maybe be true if it was very new recently cycled tank or if you had to replace filter media recently due to an outbreak of something

I think the issue would only be temp / shocking fish

People replace the water with chlorinated water and then add chemicals to remove clorine. You should be more specific

Kirin Starr :
The reason you shouldn’t is because the water parameters change too much and can shock the fish from ph, temp, hardness and other factors
