“Hyperfixation” is an intense, prolonged focus on a particular interest, activity, topic, or object. During a hyperfixation, a person may spend large amounts of time thinking about or engaging with that thing, sometimes to the exclusion of other tasks, responsibilities, or needs. It’s commonly discussed in connection with conditions like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder, but it can also happen in people without a diagnosis. Common features include: * Losing track of time while engaged in the interest * Difficulty shifting attention away from it * Wanting to learn or consume “everything” about the topic * Feeling mentally energized or absorbed by it * Neglecting things like sleep, meals, chores, or messages unintentionally Examples: * Spending an entire weekend researching a hobby * Rewatching or replaying the same Minecraft project idea for hours * Deeply focusing on a TV series, historical event, craft, or person * Coding, drawing, gaming, reading, or organizing nonstop for long stretches Hyperfixation is not an official clinical diagnosis by itself. It’s more of a descriptive term people use to explain a certain style of attention and engagement. It’s also different from: * Healthy enthusiasm: strong interest with flexible control * Obsessions in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: intrusive, distressing thoughts that feel unwanted * Flow state: deep concentration during a task, usually shorter-term and easier to exit Hyperfixation can feel rewarding and productive, but it can also become disruptive if it interferes with daily functioning, relationships, work, or self-care. #boymom #hyperfixation #adhd #intelligent
