To describe this book I would say take Murder on the Orient Express, turn the train into a boat, fill the cabins with young adults with magical abilities, and replace the very capable Detective Poirot with the chubby, bisexual, self loathing, yet ever endearing, Dee and you’ve punched your ticket to the Voyage of the Damned. I have to say I absolutely devoured this book and truly finished it in a day. I found the world building to eloquently done, enough for you to be truly invested but not so much you were bogged down with the irrelevant details. The magic within the book was unique and thoughtful; something not done before but not something so otherworldly and new that you were lost or confused. I often find myself guessing twists or surprise endings before they occur but Ravi being a shapeshifter of sorts actually threw me. I went back through the book after I was done and in the second read caught beautiful bits of foreshadowing that I missed on the first read that I must give the author kudos for. And my favorite part of the book, the main character Dee. His growth and development, how reading about him and his journey made me feel seen and heard. There was just a deep sense of satisfaction when I finished the book & I don’t think I’ve ever felt that from a book before. One thing you often see in my reviews is I complain I needed MORE. More development of character X or more details about Y but for once, I don’t think I have that complaint. Now do I want another book of Dee? Absolutely! @Frances White #taylorswift #BookTok #books #bookish #bookreview #bookreviews #voyageofthedamned #bookworm #bookclub
