The date is absolutely for the packaging. Salt is a preservative, but most paper/plastic container will reach a point where it disintegrates 🙈

The true reason has to do with bureacracy and laws concerning food, and in the eu I believe it is a maximum of 4 or 6 years even canned foods.

1. Table Salt commonly contains iodine. Iodine will degrade over time. It won't become poisonous tho. 2. The law requires an expiry date.

it's because of new Jersey. they created a law in '87 that required ALL food items have expiry dates, and national/int'l manufacturers couldn't 1/2
