If there's a box of salt that expires before it gets used up in a pro kitchen, that restaurant has bigger issues.

It’s for iodine as well as other additives. Additionally, salt will absorb smells from your kitchen over time.

If the salt has an anti caking agent then THAT definitely can expire.

This is a stupid analogy: salt is keeps forever - marble can be harmed by corrosive chemicals, including lemon juice

it's for the container. why water has an expiration date, it's when the bottle starts to disintegrate into the water

I know that for water bottles, the expiration if in reference to the bottle itself not the water, this could be similar 🤷‍♂️

I think it’s due to the fact that salt can absorb moisture which could attract other organisms. If you’re manufacturer better safe than sorry

some extremely hardy items like that only have expiry dates to aid in stock rotation. much easier to maintain first in first out if everything's dated

The date is absolutely for the packaging. Salt is a preservative, but most paper/plastic container will reach a point where it disintegrates 🙈

For table salt it’s the iodine that can expire.

1. Table Salt commonly contains iodine. Iodine will degrade over time. It won't become poisonous tho. 2. The law requires an expiry date.

it's because law requires that all food products have an expiration date. so on salt they put the longest expiration date they're allowed.

The reason is that salt can get moist and mold can start growing on it.
