Episcopal bishop asks Trump 'to have mercy' on LGBTQ+ communities and immigrants The Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, D.C., implored newly inaugurated President Donald Trump on Tuesday "to have mercy upon" communities across the country "who are scared now" after his election. "There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families — some who fear for their lives," Budde said during remarks at an interfaith prayer service at Washington National Cathedral with the president, Vice President JD Vance and their spouses in attendance. She noted the work of many immigrants to the U.S. who pick crops, clean office buildings, work in the poultry and meatpacking industries and wash dishes in the hospitality field. "They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals," Budde said. "They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches, mosques, gurdwara and temples." Budde's comments come after Trump signed executive orders late Monday to declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and pushed for the end the use of an app that allowed migrants seeking asylum to request appointments with American border officials. "Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land," Budde said before closing her remarks. #pbsnews #news #pbsnewshour #newshour #bishopbudde #RevMariannBudde #revbudde #episcopalbishop #donaldtrump #trump #church #trumpinauguration #trumpmessage #lgtbq #immigrant #refugee #bishopspeech #revspeech
A member of the famous Rothschild family is understood to have died in a house fire in the Hollywood Hills. Approximately 45 firefighters took 33 minutes to access, confine, and fully extinguish the fire within the two-story ascending hillside home. Upon arrival, fire fighters discovered a deceased elder adult male on the premises whose cause of death is under investigation by the Los Angles County Medical Examiner's Office. Neighbors told KABC he was Will Rothschild, a member of the prominent British German banking family. Rothschild was described as a reclusive millionaire who owned multiple properties and dozens of expensive cars. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said on Tuesday in her confirmation hearing for ambassador to the U.N. that while Palestinian people deserve human rights, Israel has a biblical right to the West Bank. She was responding to questions by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who pressed her on her larger views of human rights and self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians, including whether Palestinians have the right to self-determination. "I think it's a disgrace that Hamas and Hezbollah have stripped human rights of the Palestinian people and we need to ensure that we are standing up for human rights and that Israel is standing up for human rights," Stefanik said. Stefanik said she believed that Israel “is a beacon of human rights in the region,” but she did not answer whether the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination. Van Hollen then asked if she shared the view that “Israel has a biblical right to the entire West Bank,” and Stefanik said yes. Stefanik, a loyal ally to Trump, is chair of the House Republican Conference, and was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she won her seat in 2014. While she has little foreign policy experience, Stefanik has been vocal about Israel and its war with Hamas. She has called for a “complete reassessment” of the U.S.’s funding for the UN. #stefanik #palestinians #vanhollen #israel #palestine #elisestefanik #unambassador #un #unitednations #congress #westbank #middleeast #middleeasttiktok #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #confirmationhearings #trump #trumpcabinet
